Tony Elumelu is Africa Investor ‘Person of the Year’

One of Africa’s best entrepreneurs and philanthropist, Tony Elumelu has been honoured with the Africa Investor ‘Person of The Year’ award. The Nigerian economist and business tycoon received the award in New York on Monday September 19, at the Africa Investor CEO Institutional Investment Summit held on the side-lines of the on-going 71 st United Nations General Assembly. While receiving the award, Tony Elumelu who is currently Chairman of Heirs Holdings and the United Bankof Africa , extolled stakeholders in the public and private sectors committed to improving access to power in Africa. He first acknowledged the staff and management of Transcorp Power, the biggest producer of thermal energy in Nigeria, providing about 18% of national output: “In accepting this award, I want to dedicate it to Transcorp Power staff who remain committed to realizing our dream of improving access to electricity in Nigeria and making our vision of a well-lit, fully powered Nigeria come true.” Tr...

UNICEF Partners With CAF To Promote Children’s Rights At AFCON2016

The 2016 Women’s African Cup of Nations, Cameroon-AFCON 2016 will serve as a platform for the promotion of children’s rights. This is thanks to a partnership agreement signed recently between the United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF and the Confederation of African Football, CAF. The partnership presented to press at the Yaounde Multipurpose Sports Complex on September 17, will enable both organisations to launch a joint campaign for the respect of children's rights in Cameroon and to send out messages during CAN events. It will also involve players in fostering advocacy for children and facilitate the launching of fundraising activities for United Nations’ children’s rights and relief organisation in the country.   Besides the AFCON 2016, UNICEF also partners with major sports events to promote children’s rights through sport and its values. Tony Elumelu to France: What we all want to see is Africa growing its own value adding industries; the days of commodity extraction are over!

One of Africa’s most influential businessmen, Tony O Elumelu has stated that it is time Africa focuses on exporting manufactured products with added value. While calling for stronger business relationships between Africa and France, he stated bluntly: “ the days of commodity extraction are over”.     Elumelu who is Chairman of Heirs Holdings, the United Bank of Africa, UBA and Founder of the Tony Elumelu Foundation made the call in an address at the recent MEDEF Summer University Forum in Paris, and stressed on the need for mutual respect as both parties get ready to deepen trade relations.
